My spouse had a horribly abusive mother who she got away from and she looked at her credit report and saw there were 3+ credit cards opened in her name from when she was between ages 1-3. I guess it’s somehow that easy for someone to open a credit card using the social security number of an infant and toddler.

My spouses credit is currently actually in good standing. Her mom did pay off the credit cards for the most part because she had already ruined her own credit by misusing credit cards, then she ruined my spouses brother’s credit by misusing credit cards. I guess she was using my spouses credit as her last way of being able to buy stuff on credit.

The problem is she still has 3 credit cards opened in her name and one of them has a balance of over $1000. My spouse does not want to pay off this $1000+ but if she has no better option then she’ll do it.

We thought one of the ways to try to fix this mess is by getting ahold of the credit cards. My spouse does not communicate with her mom at all. (This woman is a hoarder and has a lot of dogs on the property and is just imho narcissistic psycho)

We know we have the option to try and prosecute her for identity theft and we are fine doing that if thats our only and best option but we know that would be a long process with legal fees and we want to see if maybe they’re would be an alternative method that may be cheaper and easier. What I had in mind but didn’t know if it would work or not if we could get into contact with the issuers of these credit cards and get them to send my spouse new cards in the mail then her mom would no longer have access to them.

What do you think is our best option for dealing with this situation?
