I'll keep this as brief as I can but can elaborate if it's helpful. I am in Canada if that matters.
I mainly want to know if I should spend any more time looking into this and dealing with my bank.
Also, my lesson was learned, check your statements.
Basically, my account type changed in 2014 from a free student account to a paid for chequing and savings account. The issue was that it incorrectly changed both my existing chequing and savings accounts into chequing accounts. They admitted fault on this and didn't know why it happened or why it wasn't manually corrected.
I asked several times why I had 2 chequing accounts (it was kind of annoying) and was told it didn't matter as far as charges go and I might as well keep both. I even asked to have the second one closed at one point and they convinced me to keep it open.
Fast forward to more recently. I finally start looking into this and find that I've been charged over 300 dollars since 2018 and potentially another 1k going back to 2014 (I haven't done the legwork for 2014 to 2018 yet). I'm only counting charges where the combined balance of my accounts would have been over the threshold.
Apparently, they are viewed as separate products and so I would have had to have the minimum balance in both accounts to not be charged.
They refunded 3 months of charges but They have said they will not refund any later than 90 days because the statement says issues have to be resolved within 30 or 90 days.
Do I have recourse? If I never asked for this second product (second chequing acc) or signed anything I feel like their window clause shouldn't apply. I don't even know if that is a lawful clause or if it's more like a liability waiver that's no more than a deterrent.
They admitted fault for the misinformation and the original error.
Thanks for reading and I would appreciate if anyone has advice on if I should bother proceeding.
Sorry for formatting and wording, I wrote this on mobile. Have a great day!
