I have an interview for a remote telehealth Nurse Practitioner (NP) position. I will not reveal the company name, so as to (hopefully) not hurt my chances of getting the position. I will try to be as specific as possible.
Some background about me: I am a family nurse practitioner with about 5 years of general practice under my belt. I work full time 8-5 weekdays in a clinic. I love my current job, location, and benefits. I was looking for additional revenue streams and just grind (in an effort to FIRE).
The model seems new-ish but relatively simple: the company covers marketing costs and sends patients my way. They charge patients a subscription fee ~$50/month. If they are added to my panel, I would earn $20/patient/month. They have an app to communicate securely with patients. They boast the prospect of having ~200 patients on your panel, which would earn me a gross amount of $48k/year. They admit that it is unknown how long it will take to achieve this panel. They estimate that, with a 200 patient panel, I would average 2 video appointments and 5 text conversations with patients per day. This would be a primary care position.
My concerns: As I understand it, they will have me work for them as an independent contractor and have me create an LLC. I have never experienced this before and wanted anyone’s opinion on this. I can see how it could limit some of my personal risks but, again, I don’t know much about this. Also, does anyone have any idea what ‘unexpected costs’ I could be responsible for, working for a company like this? (They outline that I may need to Cover my own malpractice if my current coverage does not extend outside of my full time position, and may need to pay a $2-$5/patient/month fee to a supervising physician, which I would be required to have due to the state I live/practice in. They also recommend a small business accountant, which won’t be free of course.)
Any thoughts on this? Is it too good to be true? Am I setting myself to fall into a hole that I can’t get out of? I don’t foresee accruing any significant costs except for the malpractice, especially if I am paying the supervising physician on a per patient basis. I couldn’t find anything online about this business or previous hirees’ experiences, likely because it’s so new, but their website looks very legit. I posted this on a nurse practitioner subreddit as well but perhaps some of you can share some insight on the general business model.
