I grew up poor, like very poor. We survived but I never had any possessions or gave a damn, and spiraled into addiction early. I ended up in prison for a couple years, and have been out for about a year. I’m 25 if that matters. I’ve been clean and sober since I got out, and I somehow landed a job making $20 an hour when I first got out. Since I started this job, I’ve gotten my license, my own place, and bought a car. Well, I got promoted today! So now I’m going to be on a 70k/year salary, and honestly I have no idea what to do with it. I have terrible credit, about a 700. I owe about 7k in student loans and various collections from old medical bills. So I figure I should start by paying that off, which I can do in a month or two, but will that even help? My expenses are $750 for rent, $100 for electric, $100 for phone, $200 for cable/internet, food and gas about $600/month. So total I’m spending about $1750/month on expenses, and making about $4.5k/month net. What do I do with the extra ~2k after I’m out of debt? I don’t want to apply for cards and get hard pills, I know that much. But what to do? My long term goal is a mortgage and nicer car, and just stability with a nest egg at the end to live off of when I’m too old to work.
