Hi financial friends, 25F here. I have a weird and somewhat sticky financial-related situation with my roommate, who happens to have the same unique first name as me. We’ve lived together for the past 3 years, and she hasn’t done anything that’s made me question her moral judgement until recently. A couple weeks ago, I got what appeared to be fake checks in the mail with my name on them from a bank I don’t use. Thinking it was spam, I ripped them up and threw them away. The following week I get a REAL debit card in the mail in my name from aforementioned bank. Immediately I called their customer service line to cancel the card and get to the bottom of it, but they didn’t have any record of my actual information (DOB, last 4 of SSN) linked to any account holder. The only thing was my first & last name (and middle initial) were used on the checks & card. The customer service agent advised I double check with my roommate, whom they did have a record of. When I brought up how strange it was with my roommate, she said she had tried to open a checking account and get a debit card issued with that bank, and insisted the bank must have made a mistake when issuing the card since we have the same first name and live at the same address. She said she would go to the bank and clear it up, but she doesn’t have an update yet. Another important note is that the checks I thought were spam were real checks because I was able to dig them out of the trash for her to look at and she said it was her checking account number on them. I’ve closely inspected my personal bank statements and there are no suspicious payments, but something about this whole situation doesn’t sit right with me. Does anyone have any advice?
