I'd currently love to live by myself in a mountain town, making enough to earn food/shelter/support a couple of hobbies. I'm terrified of making the leap though, not because I couldn't handle it, rather because it'd damage existing relationships, primarily with family and set me apart from most peers.

Not my exact situation per se, but what would you say to the:

  • PhD grad who just wants to take odd jobs requiring no higher education
  • Athlete who retires before even entering her prime
  • Son who fears his father will disown him if he walks away from a chance to make partner at a high-powered law firm in the big city

I feel these are burdens some here must have had to overcome to get what they truly wanted. Is it selfish, reckless, possible with enough courage?
