Seriously, I rarely buy books at full price anymore. Books on the website Book Outlet are new and can be crazy cheap! I find a lot of times they're cheaper than at the thrift store even (especially Value Village) I got a new bestselling hardcover book for $3, regular $34, because the dust jacket was sliced at the edge about 1/2 inch, clearly when someone was opening a box). They always have sales and students get 15% off.
Last time I shopped there, I got 24 books (a combo of popular hardcover and paperbacks) for only $50.
