For some background, I'm a contract engineer at a refinery and currently make about $96K after my pay was cut by 15% due to COVID.

We're losing an engineer to retirement soon so there is an open position and today, I got a call from a recruiter about this position. I was informed that the job was paying $166K!!

Do I have any options to negotiate as a contract employee? My current contract ends in December. I don't even know how I can walk up and demand so much more money. And to add to this, I'm going to be replacing the retiring engineer as lead engineer.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: The new position is contract as well.
