Now she hasn't done anything to warrant suspicion yet, but my mom is an addict. The past few years I have put less and less of my faith in her, and I am worried she could ruin my credit or something.
I'm 19 almost 20, and still live with her. She is in the process of looking at new places, and this will be the first time my name is on a lease, as "occupant." I've done some preliminary research but I would like to know how liable I am as a legal occupant.
If she's behind on bills, if she stops paying rent, if god forbid we are evicted, will this affect me? My credit, my renting record, or whatever?
I know that technically the landlord could go after me for unpaid bills, but I also read that me being on the lease is more a safety measure for everyone involved, rather than the landlord actually expecting me to be able to contribute. Is this correct or no?
I know absolutely nothing about finances due to the neglect I've faced the last decade. I have no credit but will be getting a credit card and and independent bank account asap. She has awful credit. I worry that she wouldn't think twice about using me.
How can I protect my identity and finances from misuse?
