Hi everyone. I hope that I am posting this in the right place. In the summer of 2018, I managed to inherit a 2000 Buick Le Sabre. The car had 62,000 miles and sat in a garage with little activity the last few years that my great grandparents owned it. The exterior of the car was nearly spotless and the interior was nice except for a sagging headliner.

Since having the car, I have had little repairs. I had to have some brake pads replaced, bought new tires and replaced the starter in January of this year. Other than that, the car has been fine. I recently switched to a new mechanic and on Friday I had a diagnostic test run on the car. My steering wheel recently started vibrating and I would hear a “clunking” noise occasionally from under the hood when turning left. I was hoping it was just a wheel alignment that I needed.

Unfortunately my car needs several repairs. It needs two lower control arm replacements ($299 each), two new wheel hubs ($219 each) and there is an oil leak that is going to require the engine to be removed for the leak to be sealed ($400 repair) plus the cost of labor. I am looking at upwards of $2000 worth of repairs. I am torn on what to do with the car. On one hand, it has 80,000 miles currently and was not very used. On the other hand, $2000 in repairs for a 20 year old car seems excessive to me. Should I put the money into a car this old or use the money to put on a down payment towards a new car?

I am a bit on the uneducated side when it comes to vehicles. Any and all advice is welcomed with open arms.
