My wife and I have been talking for a few years now about purchasing a second house once we have our current one paid off in a few years (about 3-5 years depending on the market).
Near our location there is a lakeside area that happens to be near ski lodges, several major hiking trails (including the AT), not to mention the lake. It seems like it would give us the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors without being rushed.
But since it wouldn't be a primary home, I would look to rent it out a week at a time to other folks via either an Airbnb thing, or some "rental home" booking service. I'm hoping that the same things drawing us to the area would be drawing other renters.
Now, I am still a few years out and want to start doing my research. So I am curious who has purchased a second home for personal use, with rental income as a "perk"? Has it worked well? Any major pitfalls? Any good reading suggestions?
