I had a screening call with a recruiter at a startup. I know I’m a very strong candidate and the call went really well.

Then, at the end, he asked me about what I wanted for compensation. I said that it would depend on the base/bonus structure etc and asked if he had a range. He replied and told me the exact salary, and the total comp is exactly the same as I make now.

In response, I said I was excited about the opportunity but it was similar to my current salary and I’d hope to see a bit of a bump, and said a range 15-20% higher as an ideal. He then got hostile and we had a kind of aggressive back and forth; he was like “so would you want to talk to the Director or not? Are you happy with the salary or not??” I repeated the same thing in response and sent a nice thank you email.

This seemed really unprofessional from the recruiter, and I thought it was strange how aggressive he got with negotiating comp on a first screening. Did I handle this correctly?
