I work for an engineering company. I'm 30 with a masters degree and 6 years of experience, working in a very specialized technical role. Not a lot of people can do what I do, and I'm very good at what I do.

We hired a woman here to do some generic engineering work that doesn't require much specialization. I'm not sure why, but she's terrible. Her technical skills are weak, she doesn't know any basic software like CAD or excel, she needs her hand held on everything, and she always gets confused and thinks out loud during her bouts of confusion. She's in her late 40s though.

I overheard her share her salary with another coworker (I don't know why she did that). She makes 30K more than I do per year. Now, if you have 15 years more experience than me and you're GOOD, you definitely deserve at least 30K more than me, IMO. I like to think I'm good, but there are senior gurus that are truly awesome out there. However, this woman is just the worst, and I don't see how she is worth so much money.

I had a performance review today, which went very very well. At the end of it, I tried asking for a raise, which of course was denied. As it was clear the conversation was going nowhere, I shared with my boss what I new about this woman's salary (I know my boss well and we have good rapport). I asked him why she earned so much more than me when I was much more skilled than her.

He explained to me that I'm only 30 and she's getting close to 50, and that you can't rush things, and that when I'm her age I'll earn a good salary too. Why is salary so tied to age? Where's the incentive for me to keep giving me 110% when I'll make the same salary regardless of how good I am? I'm very frustrated.
