So we have an old beat up 2005 Buick that was originally my grandma's. I use it to get to work, and my sister also drives it sometimes when she is home from college. I think we are both listed as drivers of this vehicle.

I was thinking of getting my own car, so I was asking my dad about insurance and it came up that he was spending over $500 a month on this car. I told him that seemed insanely high, and I asked if he was sure. He double checked and it was that high. He said that it's not just to protect the car itself but also to protect against damaging other people's.

I am 27, have had my license since 17, and have a pretty clean driving record apart a reckless driving ticket once when I was 19 or so, but there were no points put on my license for it (I went to court and the judge said I could just pay a fine). I've never had any points on my license. I think my sister got into an accident once a few years go but I don't know the details.

We live in New Jersey. I just want to find out if this is a totally insane price or not. He said the insurer is All State.

Would it be more cost effective for me to just get my own car and pay my own insurance? How much could I expect to get my own insurance for if I bought, say, a used 2016 honda civic?

Is there any action that I should advise my dad to take?

Thanks for any advice
