This is the second time I've done this, and both times it has worked out extremely well.

BUYING

First, I buy my replacement phone. I go to eBay, I select the criteria I want, then narrow my options to a few choices.

Then Google comparisons of the few options you found. YouTube videos work great for this.

Example:

eBay>at least 32gb internal memory, Android, Verizon, under $150. The Samsung S7 and the LG G6 were there obvious two models that met my criteria, so I searched YouTube and Google for comparisons. They were pretty even, so I simply hunted for a better deal. I was lucky and picked up an LG G6 for around $75 (including shipping)!

SELLING

Swap your sim card, and test the phone out for a week. If it's as described, immediately list your old phone with all the peripherals you own. Be extremely honest with your pictures and description. Start the auction at $0.99 and run it for 7 days.

Example:

Tested my LG G6 for a week. Everything seemed good enough. I listed my HTC one m9 at $0.99 with my old charger and case, told the bidders it has dings, scratches, and the lens over the camera is cracked. The auction closed for over $40.

That means I upgraded my phone to a 2017 flagship for $40 (eBay fees). I don't know about you, but I've found it wildly unnecessary to get the newest phone every year. A 2-3 year old phone is more than good enough for me. Also, used electronics are like used cars. They lose so much value the moment they are sold, it just doesn't make financial sense to buy new. Plus, I'd much rather get a phone that has been tested than one that was rushed through manufacturing to hot a launch date.

TLDR

The big trick here is to shop used, buy the features you want, not a specific model of phone, do some good comparative research, and immediately sell your old phone. Your old phone is old technology. It is rapidly depreciating in value. Get rid of it ASAP.
