My partner and I live together and I handle most of the food shopping and cooking. Food is the major part of our budget that I contribute to.
I'm trying to be cost effective with my shopping but we have encountered a few roadblocks. His family is well-off and they definitely splurge on food/food products. So he has some reservations about saving money when it comes to food that his family shares. I'll list the major concerns down below.
- Not-named/house brands are inferior quality.
- Products that have been in-house discounted (manager specials, etc.) are all bad/have something wrong with them and you shouldn't buy them.
- Products purchased at Wal-Mart are all inferior, regardless of brand.
I've done some work to dispel these concerns (the major step is I got him to talk to the butcher at the grocery store about how he discounts meats, and that it's mainly an issue of stock, that he'll discount if he has too much of something that needs to sell or it's a day or two from the sell-by date and it needs to go) but it's hard when that's all he's known and is genuinely concerned about what we are eating.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences and how you worked through it.
