Hi all! Long time lurker, first time poster so pardon my formatting.
Background: My wife and I are both in our mid-20's and live in the Salt Lake City area in a basement apartment paying $1000/month. We just found out a few weeks ago that she is pregnant and we are now considering what we need to do over the next few months.
I want to try my best to save as much money as possible over the course of the next 8 months to ensure we can move into a two-bedroom apartment/townhome once the baby arrives as well as afford all of the things that come with a child.
My idea is to move in with my wife's family who live in a town outside of Park City (Midway for those who know the area) starting in November and save all of the money we would have paid in rent. This would drastically cut down on overall living expenses (rent, utilities, food, internet, etc.). I personally think it will also be a big help being near family as we go through this experience.
However, this would also come with quite a few negatives: * Our ~15 minute commute would turn into a minimum of 1 hour + * Our auto gas and maintenance would go up quite significantly driving the extra distance as well as traveling up and down the mountains each day * The canyon that leads from Park City to SLC is notoriously bad during the winter due to snow storms (we both have FWD sedans, 2015 Hyundai Sonata 70K, 2014 Volkswagon Passat 80K)
I know this is all very subjective, but I would really appreciate your thoughts about this situation. Would it be worth it to move or would it be smarter to stay where we are at and find an apartment/townhome a month or so before the baby arrives? Any and all comments are appreciated. Thanks!
