I wasn’t sure where to post this, but I’m already panicking about moving out for the first time on my own, 1500 miles away from where I live now at 25. I’m an early planner and already putting my checklist in motion, but every time I think about me moving out, I panic.
I’ve asked my parents for advice, but all of their advice is outdated since as they haven’t rented an apartment or lived with other people in almost 15 years.
They keep telling me that I need to hire a realtor and it’s impossible to find a roommate online, I need to find people when I move there to get roommates. I keep telling them there are Facebook groups/sections on Craigslist just for people who are looking for a shared apartment situation. They keep insisting all of those are scams, realtors are the way to go.
Also, I’m just worried about living with strangers after hearing all the nightmare stories about the people my brother has lived with. He told me he had an arrangement with a previous roommate where he gave him the rent money via Venmo, the roommate would then pay for rent online through their portal. Apparently one time the roommate took my brother’s money and bought Coachella tickets/a two-way plane ticket to California. He up and vanished a week later, almost causing my brother to be evicted.
I’ll have the money saved up by the time I move, but I still feel like saving $10,000 isn’t enough even when people say that’s a good amount to move out with.. Also just worried about finding a job when I move, too.
