We hired a CPA that was recommended to us in 2017 as we had started a real estate LLC and our taxes were a bit more complicated. In the summer of 2018, we wanted to find out what the tax implication of a 1031 exchange would be so we reached out to this CPA. We emailed him multiple times before he responded to set up a call. We called him on that date and time and he was a no show. About a month later he sent us a one-line email from the tax code of what a 1031 exchange was, which we already knew. We gave up on him and hired a new CPA. About 6 months later at the beginning of 2019, we received a few hundred dollar bill from the CPA for 'research' and a 'call'. Neither of which occurred. We replied back and asked what the bill was for but never heard back so we did not pay it. Then last month we received another bill that seemed similar but had added an item for filing our 2018 taxes. Again we asked what it was and informed them that they did not complete our 2018 taxes as we had hired another accountant. We have just received an email response from his daughter who 'runs' the office and all she has done is remove the filing line items so that it just has an amount due for the original 'research' and 'call'. We have emailed her back and again asked what in the world was done that we are being billed for. Is there anything we can do? I fear that this will get sent to collections which seems silly over a couple hundred bucks (credit scores are around 800), but I also don't want to pay a bill for services that were never provided. How do we make this stop when they won't even return our correspondence with a timely or straight forward answer?
