Hello Reddit friends! We are grandparents of 5 who have a tradition of teaching them to give back and appreciate what they have. I shop consignment for them, and we are frugal about most things. They are learning to recycle and eat real food here.
Every year- we spend thanksgiving filling backpacks with necessities for a community organization that feeds people in need and has a shelter. The kids help us cook dressing for them every year and deliver before we eat
Thanks to a couple of flight attendant relatives, we are able to add hotel samples of razors, toothpaste, Toothbrush, lotions, sewing kits, some bath products. They use the shampoo and conditioner and usually the soap on their trips. Because I usually shop all year, it isn’t usually an issue. My husband and I have had health issues this year so I haven’t been out shopping and gathering so gotta find great deals!
We have grown to providing 24 filled backpacks from our family. Hope to grow it more next year
Here are the items we still have to gather:
- Socks- men and women ( I try to put 3 in each)
- Bar soap and plastic holder
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Raincoats (some are homeless)
- Small blankets
- Pens- we have these.
- Small notebooks
- Travel cup
- Ziplock bags
- Playing cards-
- Small flashlight
- Emergency meal- ie tuna pouches, beef stew.... Candy
My grandkids make cards, tags, and fill little sacks with Xmas candy and cookies.
I’ve bought the backpacks. Usually I get them at big lot after school sales. This year I ordered them in bulk from amazon and just hope they are good enough when they come in.
Thanks for your help!
