Throwaway obviously because I'm so embarrassed, I promise I'm being genuine.
So I've recently turned 23 and I've finally accepted that I need help and to change the situation.
In 2015 when I was 18/19 I got a really good job, like £20k a year which is good in the UK at that age. I was on top of the world, I didn't need finance or loans, although I took a couple out because I wanted to build a credit score. Over the course of two years I got a bed, a guitar and a Dyson hoover... They felt like reasonable purchases that I would easily pay off over time. I also had a credit card with £250 limit as I applied when I first started the job.
Once I hit about 20 I was made homeless, I have a really fucked up family and I haven't seen my parents since. I won't go into that, it's irrelevant I guess. But ultimately I didn't expect it, so I had no savings or plans. We had only recently moved somewhere away from everyone I knew, so I was alone in the middle of nowhere. Slept rough and in hostels until I was 22. During this whole time I didn't contact or pay off my debts or finances. They all operate via websites and needing ridiculous 16 digit codes which I just didn't have access to anymore, so it was nearly impossible to resolve and in the end I shut it all out, I felt like I had bigger issues, which I guess I did.
So I've lived somewhere proper for a year now, and I spoke to my mother for the first time and she's sent me all the letters that were sent to her home about all the debt and 3rd party groups that bought the debt along the way. It's a mess, there's so much. And the prices have gone up, it's not unpayable, but it's gone from what would've been like £600 left to £3000 judging by the letters.
I've just checked my score with clear score tonight and it's at 128. I don't know much obviously but I know that is a shambles. Although, is it saveable? I don't know, I need your help.
I've got a few questions.
If I pay off the 3rd party companies that have bought the previous debts, will they update my credit report? Or is that something only the original lenders do? I'll pay anyway, but I'm curious.
Once I organise a payment plan for these companies, how do I go about building my score? Who the heck is going to give me credit and an opportunity to rebuild?
I guess for some people it won't sound a crazy amount of debt, but to have 128 credit score is making me feel like I'll never own even the cheapest of houses or whatever in my life time. My history shows that I didn't pay a single penny for years and ignored creditors.
If you've got any other questions about the situation so you can give me better advice please do. I'm so broken. But I'm ready to resolve this the best I can.
