In one of the attached pictures, you can see where the wire goes from the floor to the ceiling. After some investigating, I found that the lower part of the wire leads to a step-down converter attached to a downstairs light fixture (see pic#2). The upper part must go nearly the entire width of my house, eventually leading to the doorbell (as confirmed by hitting the breaker and looking for things that don't work). I've been having a tough time finding information on whether extending this type of wire is possible. If I could get it about a foot longer, I could hide it under the drywall. Buying a short piece, cutting the wire and extending it that way would be all I need to do. But even though it's low power, it's still power. I wouldn't want to risk a fire. Do you think removing the step-down converter and removing the wire is my only option? I'd have to buy some sort of wireless doorbell solution, but safety is paramount.
