I'm...perplexed on how this happened, am aware of the steps to resolution but would love some clarity on how it occurred.

A month ago, I bought a $500 VISA gift card at a large grocery store. The intent was give it to my cousin as a graduation gift this past weekend and I was just preparing ahead of time. I tore it open this weekend to put in a card and checked it on a whim - card literally unopened on my desk until Saturday - and it had been wiped clean in one transaction at a physical WalMart 3 days after the purchase, about 3 weeks ago (~$499 one charge).

Obviously I'm going to file a dispute with giftcardmall (the provider I guess?) And I guess it's totally on me for not registering it but is it a thing to steal cards by making duplicates of the card? Forgive my ignorance, never dealt with VISA gift cards extensively before.. did some Googling to see how this could have happened and I've seen that as a possible scam/cause but I'd just never thought about it til now.
