It started on Tinder. He matched with a girl, and agreed to go out to dinner with her sometime soon. She said she was new to the area, from Tennessee, and that she lived with her sister. She had a snapchat and insta that matched her name, and he thought he was golden.

She told him she needed him to help her cash her check. She said she didn’t have a bank account of her own to do it with, and she usually signed it over for her sister to cash for her, but her sister wasn’t around. She offered him $50 out of the $650 check to do the favor for her. She was in the burbs, and needed to get back to her sister’s apartment in the city tonight, so she needed the gas money out of her check. He agreed, met her, and tried. He deposited the check at an atm and tried to withdraw, but Chase immediately placed a hold on it. He got her PayPal and said he’d PayPal it to her as soon as it cleared.

I figured it was a scam from the beginning, but he didn’t listen to it. Thought I was full of it. After all, she matched all her pics, had a cute southern twang to match her story, and had given him her real name attached to what seemed to be a real insta and snapchat, which both also had previous pics of her.

Two days later, Chase wouldn’t accept his payroll check from his job because they needed to confirm it was real. Apparently the check from the girl has now raised flags, and seems to be fraudulent. She won’t respond. Thankfully Chase kept him from stealing $650 from himself, and wouldn’t let him withdraw any of the money. They’re now investigating to determine if he was purposefully committing fraud.

If someone tries anything similar to this, know it’s bs. You can cash a check at Walmart. There’s absolutely no reason to cash a stranger’s check. If he had withdrawn the $650 he would’ve been stuck with the negative balance of the entire check on his account in a couple weeks once it bounced or was found to be fraudulent.

Don’t make his mistakes. The check looked like a real payroll check. The girl seemed legit. Her story seemed innocent. If anything, he at least should’ve suggested that they go into the bank and ask for advice before doing anything. The girl would’ve noped out of there and saved him the hassle, or the bank employees would’ve seen through it.

Careful with check scams.

edit- any helpful advice on how to handle this with Chase would be appreciated.
