Hi Alex,

I hope you had a great holiday weekend, grilling out with your family! After our phone call on Friday, Jim was kind enough to provide me with some helpful insight on one of the other positions I have been considering. I appreciate the confidence that you and Jeff have shown in my ability to succeed as an Upstream Development Associate Scientist at Big Pharma Company. As I said before, I am honored to be offered this position doing such important and meaningful work.

After considering all of my options and reflecting on my experiences with Big Pharma Company, I believe Big Pharma Company is the ideal place for me to thrive in my career and utilize my skillset to advance the team’s efforts with the gene therapy development process. Big Pharma Company certainly seems like a great company to work for with a welcoming atmosphere and competitive benefits.

After reviewing the offer letter, I would like to discuss the base salary before signing.

Given what I plan to contribute to the company including my diligence with experimental lab work, statistical analysis abilities, and genuine interest in gene therapy, I believe that I am an ideal fit for this position and the advancement of Big Pharma Company’s gene therapy process development efforts. The 2+ years of experience that I bring to the table and the value demonstrated in my prior industry roles warrant a proposal of a salary closer to $71,850, after thoroughly researching similar positions and roles in which biological engineering graduates pursue.

Again, I am thrilled to have been offered this position, and I am eager to achieve great results on the Upstream Development team. Please let me know your thoughts.

Background:

just graduated from number 1 undergrad BE program in the US. I have 2.5 years of industry experience already (position posted asked from 0-3). 2 years at a power plant as energy engineer intern, and 6 months at a winery/distillery doing experimental work as a distilling intern. offer was $64,000 + $4000 sign on. (at my 6 month internship I received a $6000 sign on bonus)... i have another company actively trying to interview me and expedite the process, however I need to make a decision by friday and I would prefer to work for this company. although the other company would pay 71-75k (manufacturing position instead of R&D)... i had a 6 hour interview with 14 different people and had to fly out and stay overnight for the interview. they have invested a lot in my and not only the manager but the director is reaching out to me to see what my decision is.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
