I think it started out a while back when I had a bad clog in my drain line. I had disconnected the P-Trap and tried to snake it out myself to no avail, so I called a plumber who was successful. Reassembled and everything was great, so I thought.Several months later I noticed everything under my sink always seemed to be damp and mildewy. Ran some water and noticed that on both sides, water was leaking through the strainer baskets. This is a stainless steel standard double sink by the way.So I read up on how to replace them, got the parts, and replaced both with new baskets. I used new plumber's putty and did it according to multiple instructions I saw online. After tightening everything down, I did a leak check and everything seemed sealed up nice and tight. So I thought I was done. I was wrong.A few weeks later, the right sink started leaking. The left sink was still leak-free, though. I thought I might not have used enough putty, although on both sides I had a very large amount squeeze out when I was tightening it down. I took the right side off, re-applied putty, tightened it back down, and did a leak check. All good. Except this time I had found some instructions online saying to wait several hours before using the sink to allow the putty to dry. Of course "several" is a relative term and it didn't say exactly how many hours, just this vague "several." So I gave it about 6 hours before we absolutely had to use it.Everything was fine for another couple weeks, and now the LEFT side is leaking! I'm at my wits' end here and am ready to break down and just call a plumber. All of the instructions online are very simplistic and make this look very easy. I follow them to the letter. And yes, I know the leaks are coming from the basket strainer because when I look under the sink I can see the water flowing from that joint. These are new strainers with new gaskets.Anyway, I'm afraid of the right side starting to leak again. I did have trouble tightening it down last time. I was tightening the nut and it would suddenly get loose. Then I'd tighten again and it'd get tight, tight, tight, and then loose again. I didn't cross-thread so I don't know what's going on there. It's not leaking so I'm leaving it alone for now.I just don't know what I'm doing wrong overall. I'm putting a snake of putty around the opening on the top, making sure the gaskets are on the bottom, pushing it down into the putty, and making sure it's not spinning as I tighten. And it works great for a few weeks and just starts leaking. Like the putty is being eaten away over time or something. Is there anything different I should be doing? Could the problem be the sink itself? Could it be deformed or something? via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2DUnPEl
