My dad has been a fairly successful stock trader (with mostly small amounts of money) for around 5 years now in addition to his day job and he's looking to get into the financial business on his own. He's currently studying for the series 65 exam and is looking to get started with clients within the next year.
He's been quite dedicated in learning, but I'm concerned that without any experience in the financial industry he's going to run into a lot of roadblocks he's not expecting, specifically involving keeping track of all the accounts for his clients. Right now he just uses excel spreadsheets for everything, but as I know from experience in the software industry, at some point you need something more specialized than excel to run a business.
Can anyone with experience share anything they wish they knew when they started in the finance industry, or whether there is good software targeted at small finance businesses for keeping track of accounts?
