I'm looking to move to NYC in the near future. (Haven't found a job yet, but I have Series 7 and Series 63 securities licenses, so I really hope it wouldn't be hard to be hired at a finance company.)
Anyway, questions:
- Should you seriously start apartment hunting only when you get hired? And do jobs usually give you a bit of time to find a place before you're expected to start working..?
- Since I live across the country from NY, I can't easily do apartment tours. I mean I guess I could fly there just for a day or two -- would that be enough time to check out a few potential places?
- I've only had a credit card for a few months (don't judge me) so I don't have a credit score built up. Could I use my sister to secure my apartment?
- If I see an apartment ad that says "$1,500 per month, utilities included," does that really mean I will be paying $1,500 a month? Or are there more fees that somehow come into play?
- What is the ideal amount you should have saved up before you move? I have only seen 12 month apartment contracts. Should I save up 6 months' rent? More?
- Any good website recommendations to look for apartments?
Thank you in advance for any help! I have lived a pretty sheltered life and I'm trying to do this thing that I'm terrified of (moving across the country by myself), so I really appreciate any advice that I get!
