I was so fed up of paying so much for cell phone service + paying to lease the newest iPhone. I became determined to get off the hamster wheel - moved to Ting first w. an old Android phone and referral links from online articles & friends (each of which gives you a $25 credit). I started not using any cell data, just WiFi with a VPN wherever I went. It's amazing how many places have free WiFi now. The Ting plan was $17 a month, already a big savings! Then a family member who learned of my frugal quest informed me they had received a free line on T Mobile a year ago and had a spare iPhone 5 w/ a sim card just hanging around the house. I ported my number to that old iPhone and I'm now paying ZERO bucks a months for my cell phone and cell service. Offered to pay something for the plan but family member declined offer. Also, I love the older iPhone, it's only 4" or so, much more appropriately sized to fit in jeans and more than enough to meet my needs.
