I just got a better paying new job and I really want to get a newer car but I also want to save up some money now that I'm making a decent amount.

Now that I'm looking at car prices, I'm wondering if I should fix my older car and just drive it until it dies. My only concern is that it is a 2004, already has 185k miles and needs a lot of work. At this point I could still get a little trade in credit for it.

At what point is it not worth fixing up an older car? This is the only vehicle I've ever had and I really love that it's paid off but I get nervous that it's going to die somewhere far from home and I'm going to be stuck out in the summer heat with my kid in the car.
