Hi. So a bit of background: my dad agreed before I went to college that he would pay for my school, as he didn’t want me to go to the place that gave me a ride and I didn’t want loans. He also makes a very good amount of money and is incredibly on top of his credit and finances. I live at home currently, work at a great company, and was told school had been completely paid for.
I am now a year out of college and at a great new job. Ever since I got credit cards I’d been on top of them to the point I had a credit score nearing 800. I was unemployed after school a bit so it went down to a 763 but was headed back up.
I have a budgeting app and Saturday I got a notification that I was marked as delinquent on my credit report and my score went down to a 580. I immediately investigated and found that I had 9 loans (all about $1k from nelnet) 108 days past due. I was never told I had loans, they never showed up on any of my accounts or my credit, etc.
I investigate further and after creating a nelnet login that they’ve been sending emails to an out of date email I haven’t used in years and had my address from 2015 on file. The loans all started requesting payment 6 months after graduation.
I immediately try and get in contact with my dad, who is away on a business trip, and find out that he took out loans (as me via the school) that are offered to most students for small amounts, which was odd to me considering this is money he easily has and he always held paying for my school over my head saying it was done.
He’s now paid the loan, but nelnet has said this was a “personal misunderstanding” and there can only be a dispute with the credit bureau if it had to do with me being military, ill, etc and that this will remain a delinquency on my credit for 7 years. I am literally at a loss for what to do because my credit score is now destroyed and I was about to begin looking for apartments and had a long term goal for a mortgage etc and am very responsible with my finances/credit.
This is very in line with my dads behavior, if any of you know r/raisedbynarcissists, he is the epitome of it. Hence why I aimed to look for an apartment. But these loans were something I was told I didn’t have or I would’ve paid them myself and it’s now ruined my credit score. All of my other factors, bills paid in full on time, amount of cards, etc is considered excellent.
Any advice on my options to fix it would be greatly appreciated.
