I own many pairs of DT socks, and am at about year 3. Only 2 out of maybe 12 models have proven to be darn tough, in my opinion. Those two pairs, I absolutely love. For the others, I will be making good use of that return policy.
It seems to me that whether or not they are actually DT depends on your foot geometry and biomechanics. I am VERY hard on socks and shoes. I routinely grind holes in my running those. I've tried 4 pairs of DT running socks, and the only ones that didn't start to get thread bare after a few months were one of the coolmax pairs.
For me, what I find is that the weak point consistently is on the bottom edge of the sole of foot, where big and little toe knuckles are. DT socks over have a more durable layer on the sole (often a rectangular patch). but it is not large enough for my foot. It only really covers the bottoms of my middle three toes, and the outer ones stretch over. This is around where the holes ultimately occur. With my warranty requests, I've sent in my viewpoints to DT, suggesting possible design modifications. I don't expect them to change necessarily; I am one customer of millions.
However, despite not really being darn tough, the company has honored my warranty requests so far (knock on wood). For this reason, I give them my thumbs up.
For me, the two models that have held up extremely well are the Warlocks and the Sante Fe's. I got these ~3 years ago, have worn them many many times, and the have lived. The Warlocks (at least at the time, not sure if it is still the same) had an extra wide bottom pad that had higher durability); pretty bad ass for a life style sock. The Sante Fe's are darn tough in the purest sense... The bottom padding is super tough and covers the entire bottom food. I am slowly getting thread bare in the Achilles heal, and that is a location that doesn't get much stress. I am impressed.
But for all of the others, for me, they have been a bit of a let down. I recognize that it probably has to do with my unique foot, but since I see some socks that can handle the abuse I put them, it appears to be a solvable problem.
Anyways, just my two cents. If anyone has recommendations on models that resemble the Warlock & Sante Fe's, I will gladly give them a try.
