My boyfriend and I need to file taxes. For the last few years we've not had a problem. This year we were going to file with someone else. He files married but separately. His "wife" is a drug addict and he's not seen her since 2001. She just up and left one day. I tracked her down a couple of years ago on Facebook and tried to get her SSN, I tried to get her to call the CPA to give it to her. But she refused. We have no idea where she is. She is now on heroin, before she was on meth. Anyway, when I was talking to the new CPA she said, " He can't file married separately if he don't have her information ". Is this true? I don't understand why we could file the previous years with just her name. I know we need to hire a lawyer so he can get this over with and divorce her once and for all. I'm hoping we'll be able to do that very, very soon. Any advice on filing would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks y'all for your advice. I'm going back to the old CPA since the new one seems to either not want to do a paper file or doesn't know to. Either way it goes, that doesn't speak to the service she would be providing.
