Long time reader, first time poster.I am making a shoe bench for our entryway. It is a fairly simple boxy design make from a single 2x12x12 because doing things like that amuses me for whatever reason. As I get ready for assembly I'm thinking/noticing that most benches have an arch or upside-down-V carved where the base meets the floor and I'm wondering why. Attempting to search for the answer has been fruitless and after watching several videos on Youtube they all seem to skip that step for what I assume are reasons. So my question is- what purpose does the arch/V serve?A few possible answers come to mind- it is more aesthetic, it creates four points of contact instead of two for grip/balance, maybe something about wood splitting, etc... but I'm not sure and was hoping you kind reader could fill me in.Thanks for taking the time to help a wood-putter-togetherer. via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2RZH209
