Hey all,

I’ve been living and working in the greater Boston area for about a year now. I strongly dislike my job, I am not crazy about where I live, and I am looking for a change, but I feel trapped. I’m desperate to receive some job-shifting advice. Here’s my situation:

  • I’m in my early 20s. I am a fairly recent college graduate (graduated a little over a year ago now) with an Information Systems degree. The degree was essentially a fusion of business management and IT management, with limited programming classes. I have a 3.95 GPA and had great work experience in college.
  • I work at a firm now that pays me a ridiculous amount for what I do - $120k, fully paid benefits, decent profit sharing, and other perks.
  • My experience revolves around large-scale systems implementations with quite a bit of “software development”, though the development is in a fairly proprietary environment and is based on an old programming language.
  • My wife and I have about $50,000 of student loans, but have made major headway at paying it off (almost $25k in the first year!). We have no other debt and a pretty good savings - $11k in the emergency fund, $7k in retirement, and about $5k in different accounts.
  • We live in a cheap and spacious area when compared to the costs of the surrounding metropolitan area.
  • I am have zero friends at other companies in Boston that could give me a foot in the door, so that makes things difficult.

All in all, I’m not really sure what to do. We will have to live here until my wife graduates, so moving to another state is not an option. I work pretty long days, and so tooling up quickly for another development job would be extremely challenging.

I guess I’m just lost. I don’t really know what to do (that doesn’t result in a massive pay cut), but I want to be happier with where I work. My experience at the company thus far has been nothing short of miserable, and I’m questioning if I can make it another year, especially as the project gets busier (we have phases, and the next 6-8 months are going to be very, very busy). If you asked me a year ago if I’d work a horrible job for 120k, I’d say yes. But after doing it for a year, my perspective has changed.

Any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you so much for taking your time to read this and give a response!
