An apartment complex wants to hire an acquaintance to a newly established marketing/social media management/on-site supervisor position.

They are discussing covering all rent/expenses and providing a smaller salary rather than hashing out a higher hourly rate or annual salary.

Example:

Free rent and $25k/yr

vs.

$49k/yr

Is there a benefit to choosing one over the other if given the choice? Would the compensated rent be considered taxable income?
