My wife is a federal employee, currently working without pay. She expects to receive backpay once the shutdown ends. This should include pay for work done at the end of December as well as January.

However, her 2018 W-2 has already been generated and I've already started working on our taxes. When she receives backpay, will it attribute to 2018 pay when the days were worked, or will it attribute to 2019 when the payment actually processes?

My Google search only came up with one article that seemed to imply it would attribute to 2018 pay. I realize we're in uncharted territory here, but if anyone has any idea, I'd love to hear your perspective!

If we expect the backpay to add to 2018 income, I'd also expect to receive an amended W-2, in which case I'll hold off on doing our taxes for now.
