Hi everyone, How did you guys become finically literate and get on top of your finances?
My reason for asking is, I’m a math heavy stem grad so personal finance was just a bit of knowledge acquisition and mental math as far as I see it. I’ve tried to pass on some money management skills to my mother and my efforts have mostly failed. She completely lacks basic budgeting skills, knowledge of how interest rates work(she’ll pay off low interest debt before she pays high interest debt) and a shopping addiction have left her fairly broke.
Any impact I’ve had on improving her personal finances have largely been fought tooth and nail because she wants to maintain control over how she manages her money. Which leads me to the conclusion that the only way through this is for her to learn these skills on her own but I am no teacher, so any advice on how to send her down the right road would be much appreciated.
