I am 26M filing single. My sibling is a 25M who was unemployed some of the year in 2018. I sent him $7300+ through Venmo last year (multiple transactions with a max amount of $1000) to help him while he underwent a major life change and needed financial support.
Is there a way to deduct this from my taxable income? I do not intend to claim him as a dependent (he did not live with me, was over the age of 24 etc). There is a clear electronic record of these monetary “gifts” via the Venmo app.
Your advice is appreciated.
Edit: My question has been answered. Contributions to qualified organizations (charities) can be deducted, but never contributions to individuals.
Edit 2: he made more than $4150 and is not a qualifying relative
