I am 33 years old and finally realizing I should actively prepare for retirement. I spent the last ten years working overseas, earning a master’s degree, and moving roughly every two years. I am behind in my saving and currently have approximately $35,000 saved for retirement.
I have a 457b account through my employer with a 3% match. I am contributing far beyond what I need to earn the match.
I am also eligible for a 403b account but not eligible for an IRA because my spouse and I file our income taxes separately.
I’m trying to figure out whether I should put all of my contributions into the 457 or if I should open a 403b. I don’t know anything about my 457b other than how much money is currently in it. How do I manage this account on my own? I’m considering speaking with a financial planner but I hesitate to trust someone. Any advice?
