Made a throwaway because my kids are also Reddit users and I'd rather them not see this post yet. The title basically explains it. My wife and I are realizing that we made some poor financial decisions in the past, and now they have caught back up to us at an unfortunate time. One of my kids is heading into college next year and the other two are not far too behind. I want to help them and be transparent about the situation, but I do not want scare them heading into the future. We have done well so far, living in a nicer home and having some of the modern toys, but our investments have somewhat failed us, and we are not nearly as well of as we once thought we would be at this point. My wife and I both have jobs but I do not see how we are going to be able to afford throwing thousands at my kids' tuition expenses in the coming years.
Has anyone gone through something like this? How did you tell your kids? How did they react? It is painful to come to this realization but I feel it is better to address it sooner than later. Anything would help. Thanks!
