Hi all. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I’ve done some research and have a family member who is an accountant who I will also follow up with but would like a general opinion as you are all so helpful. My boyfriend and I own a house which we recently purchased this year. He is listed as a domestic partner on my health insurance but doesn’t receive HSA benefits (IRS). My company reimburses me a portion of the taxes taken out for the domestic partner status but not entirely. I only work one job. I have always claimed 0 on my W4 but now with a recently purchased house, higher taxes for health insurance, being unmarried, a little renovation debt I’m wondering if I will benefit from claiming 1. I do not want to owe anything at the end of the year and could still claim my house as I make less than him and from what I believe receive more of a refund. Without going into specifics I make between 50k-60k a year. Any suggestions or pitfalls of claiming 1 vs 0? Thanks in advance!
