Almost 18, want to start building credit, want to open a mutual fund, and want to start a 401K. Is this a good idea? Or a waste?

I want to be ahead of the curb. My first 1 and 1/2 of college is paid for, and I turn 18 in April, don’t start till next fall and I have money That I want to use wisely now. No bills or rent because I will be living with my parents.
