Last Thursday I checked my accounts and noticed all my money was moved from my Money Market to my checking. I thought it was some kind of bank error so I moved it all back to Money Market. The next morning I checked and it was back to Checking.

At this point I changed my password. Shortly after I went to check again, my new password wasn’t working. Now I started to get a real idea that I was compromised. I did a deep dive into things. First I checked my deleted email, sure enough I had deleted emails for the password reset. They were able to change my password because they had access to my email too. Now I went back to my bank account and looked for suspicious activity. I checked my messages(I never do this because it’s usually just silly reminders about my statement being available). Once again, solid proof. A failed transfer to a unknown PayPal account. My moving that money back to money market stopped them from getting anything. I’m not giving myself credit here, I thought it was a bank error and by dumb luck, I stopped the transfer.

I called the bank and had them lock my account. After a day at the bank changing my account numbers. I got home and wiped all my computers. I then began the process of changing the password on all my accounts and enabling 2step verification on all accounts with it available. 2step sends you a text message code every time you log in. It’s a bit cumbersome but totally worth it. It’s a bit annoying to use 2 step verification but nothing compared to my week and lingering fear that I missed something.

Secure your accounts and use good security etiquette. It’s worth the frustration.
