Hey everyone, just started using reddit but wanted to start a discussion and get some constructive career advice.

I’m a finance major at a state school, graduating in the spring of 2019, and have accepted a job in financial planning with a decent sized, but not well known firm. I’ve always had a passion for investing and the markets and completed an internship in financial planning this past summer which I loved and really helped put me on the track of pursuing this field as a career. However, I have a few issues weighing on me.

Being a newly graduated financial planner, outside of my internship, I have next to no hands-on experience in the field and am worried it’s going to be a tough uphill battle building my client book my first few years starting out. Why would someone trust me with their finances over someone with 5-20+ years experience? I’m confident in my abilities and realize that with experience will come a ton of learning, but I’m worried of being overlooked early in my career.

My second issue stems from my natural market of potential clients I’ll start to reach out to in the near future. I know my parents and close family trusts me and will hopefully become my first few clients, but being that I’m lacking experience, I’m worried about the value I can add to them early on, and don’t want them to feel like they have to let me be their advisor while I’m just starting to build my book. I will have mentors and a team around to help me, which I realize is incredibly valuable, but I don’t want my family to feel obligated to let me look over their finances, even though they would never tell me they feel obligated either way.

I’m extremely excited to start my career in this field, and really help people while doing something I love, but I think there will definitely be some struggles early on. If anyone has feedback, experiences, or stories to share with me I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
