Okay so here is the thing, I'll be staying in Finland for around 6-7 years "minimum".
According to my math, I'd be spending in rent in those years, around 65k euros.
Now here is the thing, I basically work deep in the forest and virtually in the countryside, I have a permanent public job contract in the nearest town in the middle of nowhere which isn't the best paid but it's quite safe and flexible, there are houses around and nearby where old people used to live (who have passed away); and none wants to live there, the services aren't the best there, and wood heating is how those houses do their job.
Is it really a good financial idea to get a loan?... and buy one of those rustic places?... maybe around 80k?... which is yes more than I'd pay in rent on those years, but I'd end up having a place afterwards, I don't mind much the difficulties as long as the place is in good condition and doesn't freeze in winter; also such places offer opportunities of free food (mushrooms and berries), unlike city centers, plant food on summer, grain, etc... which is my kind of living, (of course not as survival but as a hobby but still kinda helps reduce bills). The places are also considerably larger than houses nearer city centers, so can even be couple of hectares of land.
For me it'd be a straightforward yes (since I like building, planting stuff and keeping animals) if it wasn't because of: 1. I cannot tell certainly if the house has foundation issues that would be unfixable, since I am not an expert. 2. While my job seems very permanent, none can predict the future; as a teenager I lost everything to communism, so I am always very paranoid, even the unlikely can happen.
This is the first time I think on something this big, help :(
