For hundreds of thousands of years humans didn't own more than they could carry because they had to move around. They spent their days in nature, hunting, fishing, teaching their children, weaving baskets etc. Everything together with their tribe, of course.
They suffered wars, conflicts, disease (to an extent), infant mortality and accidents so the optimal life is clearly not identical but maybe just inspired by it. A lot of authors don't seem to make this connection and might explain it in their own "just because" reason.
Do you believe things like a lack of possesions, hunting and doing things ourselves is part of us?
