I am mounting my 60" TV above my fireplace. Above the fireplace is a large inset box, where they used to put big CRT TVs. This inset is about 12" deep. I bought a mount that extends 12" inches maximum from a wall, but I would like to build out the back of the inset so I have more clearance. Basically, the idea is to have my TV covering the hole in the wall and all my equipment, audio receiver etc would hide behind it. I was thinking of screwing 2 4x4s to the back wall on the left and right, then screw 2 more 4x4s to those, so I would have 8" in total. From there, I would install the mount to the 4x4s. That way I can move my TV aside, once mounted, and access the equipment. What do you guys suggest for a strong extension from the back wall of the inset? I'm sure there is a better idea...
