I have a light switch with 2 actual switches - one turns the light on/off and the other turns the fan on/off. The light one wasn’t working consistently so I wanted to replace it. When I took it off there was a red wire connected to the top screw, a black wire connected to the bottom screw (it was also connected to the fan switch) and a black wire poked into the back of the switch near the bottom screw. When I replaced it I thought the poked-in wire was maybe a ground wire? So I connected it to the green screw on my new switch. Hooked everything back up and the light and fan worked but none of the outlets in the room worked. So I undid it all, hooked up the old switch (poked the 2nd black wire into the back again, rather than around the green screw) and now the lights and outlets work fine.Help me understand this poked-in wire please.
