I have not received a raise from my employer for quite a while, when I spoke to our GM, he went to the owner and in lieu of a raise they have decided to give me a "tool allowance". I am a mechanic so a lot of money does go to tools. However this is just a flat check, not on my pay stub, nor is it taxed. Is this considered income? Or is this considered the company allowing me a certain amount of money each week to use at my discretion for tools? I don't know if I am allowed to use the money for any other purpose? Is this similar to a per diem for food at other companies?
